Acupuncture is an amazing tool which aims to promote balance of body, mind and soul with the ability to treat a wide variety of health conditions. Our treatments are individually tailored and holistic, administered in a calm, nurturing and supportive environment.

The style of acupuncture we practice is gentle and focuses on providing a deep sense of relaxation which quietens the busy mind and allows the body to heal, flow and function.

Originating in China approximately 3,500 years ago, acupuncture is an ancient modality which now has science to support its effectiveness. Practitioners also utilise mindfulness-based medicine as the foundation of each treatment, with the aim of educating and teaching techniques to better improve physical and mental health. Acupuncture may be beneficial in the care and management of conditions relating to pain, musculoskeletal concerns, mental wellbeing, pregnancy and postpartum support, digestion and other discomforts, the team at Life Synergy are eager to help, listen and support you to find the balance in life.

Acupuncture for Mental Wellbeing

According to the Australian bureau of statistics, In 2018 one in eight Australians experienced an anxiety- related condition and one in ten experienced depression or feelings of depression (1).

As this figure is consistently on the rise, we also notice a correlation between mental ill-health and a multitude of physical illnesses. Mental health concerns can result from various causes such as chronic pain, genetics, post-natal, trauma and more. Frequently patients find their mental-emotional wellbeing is closely intertwined with the physical health and functioning of their bodies.

At Life Synergy we acknowledge that there is stigma and at times judgement towards mental ill-health, and we aim to shift the approach to this incredibly prevalent subject as a 'cultivation of mental wellbeing'. Acupuncture offers an adjunctive treatment to conventional therapies employed in mental healthcare and supports the individual in many shapes and forms towards achieving mental wellbeing and emotional balance. We understand our patients are walking their unique journeys, and we are honoured to be of service along the path. Important factors involved in greater improvement of mental wellbeing are the patient's engagement and commitment to care, lifestyle choices and mindfulness.

 Treating Mental Health Through Acupuncture

Isaac Newton quoted he achieved his merits by standing on the shoulders of giants before him. Transformational Acupuncture is Life Synergy's approach to mental health, or as we like to say 'mental wellbeing'.

The Transformational Acupuncture system that we implement here at Life Synergy was developed by Dr Alexander Joannou MBBS (Hons) FACNEM, a medical doctor and a practice principal of 'Northside Health' Coffs Harbour with over 40 years of experience. Dr Joannou had devoted his career to understanding and treating mental health. Since introducing acupuncture in his consultations, Dr Joannou has documented significant benefits to patients with mental health issues and has formalised an educational approach for acupuncturists.; furtherdiscussed in his book“Transformational Acupuncture: A drug-free solution for Depression” (publication in 2018).

Dr Joannou has witnessed firsthand the complex interrelationship between the mind, body and spirit. A marked difference was apparent in his patients' motivation and approach to their own wellbeing, as they also implemented healthier lifestyle choices following regular treatments (exercise, nutrition, meditation etc.).

How the treatments work:

  • Arrive a few minutes before your appointment to fill out 'Mind, Body, Spirit' score sheet.

  • Front and back acupuncture treatment: 40 mins comfortably positioned face down followed by 20 mins positioned face up.

  • Allow for 80 minutes for each treatment

As the acupuncture treatments have a cumulative effect, it is highly recommended to do the course of 12 treatments over 12 weeks. In more severe/chronic cases , two or three courses of 12 treatments are recommended.

If you are interested in addressing your mental wellbeing through acupuncture and unsure if these are the right treatment for you, please get in contact with our natural health team at the clinic for advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing system utilised throughout the world for over 3,500 years. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the treatment of specific acupuncture points located on energy pathways called meridians throughout the body.

How does it work?

Energy, or ‘Qi’ flows along the meridians to promote optimal function and balance in the body. Internal and external influences can block or damage this flow resulting in pain, disease or emotional imbalance. Each acupuncture point has a specific action and is carefully selected as part of your individually tailored treatment plan to remove blockages, increase circulation and stimulate the nervous system. By regulating the Qi, balance is achieved, ultimately restoring the function and health of the body, mind and soul.

Does it hurt?

Extremely fine needles are placed on the acupuncture points located on the meridian channels that run throughout the body. Commonly the needles aren’t felt at all. Instead, an experience of feeling light and deeply relaxed during treatments with an enhanced feeling of well-being are experienced following treatment. At Life Synergy we often incorporate body work or Chinese massage as an adjunct to acupuncture to enhance the treatment effects by stimulating circulation and allowing the body to relax optimally.
